Espanola is our closest large town and has great restaurants, accommodations, cultural center

and shopping. Espanola is centrally located between Santa Fe and Taos, and close to 4

Indian Pueblos; Santa Clara Pueblo, San Juan Pueblo, Nambe Pueblo and San Idelfonso Pueblo.

For the best the state has to offer for views, fishing, hiking, hunting and horseback trails,

visit The Valles Caldera National Preserve. We will be offering limited horseback trips into this area

Bandelier National Monument

Bandelier is an ancestral Pueblo village (ruins) dating from

the 1100's. A self-guided tour takes you through the village,

the long-house and up ladders to an ancient cave/kiva. Definitely

worth seeing. The local pueblo at Santa Clara claims this as an

ancestral village as well as the area known as Puye. Puye cliffs

are currently closed to the public as the area is being renovated.

As soon as this area is reopened, there will be information listed here.

 

The Abiquiu area has much to offer. Fishing, hiking, boating, Echo Amphitheater,

Ghost Ranch Conference Center and Museum, fossil hunting, and the magnificent

red rock formations are just a few highlights of the area.

Classic designs in silver and gold and a great selection of southwest

Shidoni foundry, gallery and gardens are worth the visit. Incorporate the visit

with a trip to Santa Fe. The Gallery will dazzle the imagination. The Bronze

sculptures in the 8 acre garden will amaze you and are open during daylight

hours year round.

 

Ojo Caliente Hot Springs  is one of the oldest health resorts in North America and

only 15 miles from Equine Escapes!  They have seven mineral

pools and private mineral baths. They also offer massage, facials, milagro wraps, and yoga.

They are hiking and biking trails. I can bring the horses here and use the trails. There are

remains of Indian ruins and views of the area. There is a toll-free number for reservations

Black Mesa Winery features local wines grown by the Rio Grande River. Located just

north of Espanola on the highway to Taos, at mile marker 15, Hwy 68.

Pilar and Embudo Station are areas that local rafting companies offer white water

rafting and are popular fishing spots. The rafting companies operate out of

Santa Fe. Call the Santa Fe Chamber of Commerce at 505-983-7317 for more

info.

 

The road to Lyden/El Guique offers some spectacular petroglyphs on your left as you

proceed upriver. Starting in Chamita near San Juan Pueblo, follow road #582 north.

The petroglyphs start just after the church in El

Guique and continue for over 1 mile. This road parallels the Rio Grande and comes

out in Velarde, just north of Espanola. This area is not accessible by horseback, but is well worth the drive from here.

It is only minutes away.Take a camera.

Dos Lunas Bed and Breakfast is an authentic Northern New Mexico

restaurant,The Artesian. Only 20 minutes from Equine Esapes. Kick back here after

your ride. You won't be sorry! One of Equine Escapes favorite local hangouts.

 

The Abiquiu Inn offers lodging and fine dining in a truly northern New Mexico

setting.  Another 20 minute drive. Located in the heart of Georgia O'Keefe

country. The artist's home is open for tours from April to November. It is

Casita de Chuparosa is another fine B&B located in Abiquiu, the heart of Georgia O'Keefe

country. Your hosts Jeff and Marilyn will be happy to share their love of cooking and

Casa del Rio is convieniently located equi-distant from Santa Fe or Taos. They

are also only minutes from Equine Escapes. Casa del Rio features a traditional

The Best Western Ohkay Casino Resort/Hotel is located at the

San Juan Pueblo on Highway 68. San Juan Pueblo is only 4 miles from Equine Escapes. Besides the casino,

the pueblo has a crafts cooperative, local potters, and jewelry artists. There is also

a historic church located near the plaza.

Places to Dine

 

Here's a few recommendations on where to dine while in the Espanola Valley.

 

El Paragua is a famous Northern New Mexico restaurant featuring local cuisine, steaks

grilled over Mesquite coals, seafood, and of course, Margaritas! 

Be sure to make reservations as this popular spot gets busy. Right in Espanola.

Another popular restaurant for Northern New Mexico cuisine is Rancho de Chimayo.

Located near the famous Santuario de Chimayo, this restaurant is famous for it's

"Chimayo Red" chile dishes. This area is also known for it's many weaving shops

and galleries. Weaving in Chimayo goes back 8 generations.

Sugar's BBQ in Velarde is a roadside cafe with outstanding smoked, then

sauced, meats complete with side dishes. While Sugar's doen't offer inside

seating, you can sit outside during mild weather. Take some back to your

hotel. It's simple, but you won't be disappointed! 505-852-0604

 

Mariscos La Playa offers Acapulco-style Mexican food which is

a delicious blend of seafood and shellfish. Not to spicy and

an extensive menu with beer and wine. Try the shrimp coctail,

it's a meal in itself ! Food is also available for take-out.
